About The Artwork

Richard Trupp has worked with steel all his life. He transforms the miniature and mundane into the monumental and significant. “Richard is ambitious,” noted the late Sir Anthony Caro of his protege, whose art is grounded in a deep respect for his sculptural forebears. Richard’s signature sculptures are a nod to his mentor’s industrial leanings but also a very emblematic direction of his own. He continues in the Caro vein, pushing the possibilities of sculpture forward. His work is rarely self-contained or limited to its own physical boundaries, but frequently seeks to reference aspects of the broader environmental context surrounding it. Successful installations are sited Internationally and across the UK and in 2019 Richard represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale. In the piece POP he explores the possibility of a giant tied end of a balloon. A maquette of a larger sculpture in a domestic sized bronze Pop Art piece. The sculpture is available in bespoke colours and is hand made by the artist. Clear base not included. Please note that once an order is placed there is a two week period where a bespoke wooden case is constructed ready for shipping.

Richard Trupp (b 1973) is a protégée of Sir Anthony Caro He spent a year under Caro’s tutelage before further honing his craft on the works of Jake and Dinos Chapman, Marc Quinn, Edwardo Paolozzi and Rebecca Warren. Trupp was also drafted in to assist on Caro’s landmark Millennium Bridge by the Tate Modern. Trupp continues in the Caro vein, pushing the possibilities of sculpture forward. His work is rarely self-contained or limited to its own physical boundaries, but frequently seeks to reference aspects of the broader environmental context surrounding it. Trupp’s own art is grounded in a deep respect for the history of sculpture though he is anything but a traditionalist as his sharply crafted pieces and emotive titles demonstrate. Born in Birmingham, Trupp has been strongly influenced by a city that once rejoiced in the sobriquet ‘the workshop of the world. Richard Trupp has been nominated for the prestigious Jerwood Sculpture Prize Richard Trupp has worked with steel all his life.
