About The Artwork

In my sculptural works of the past years, I have increasingly dealt with resistant sculptural elements in private and public space. Among other things, I worked with elements of traffic management, such as crash barriers, mirrors and temporary shut-off elements. The intention of these installations was to thematize the interaction between the recipient and the sculpture through contextual shifts.   Starting point of the intervention Pythagoras, are rectangular support elements made of iron, which were used for the conversion of an old inn in the area of Basel. These elements served as a temporary support to stabilize a wall that would otherwise have collapsed. After the construction of the new house construction, these elements are no longer needed and are free for a reinterpretation.   The rectangular support triangles, which are welded from double T-beams with profile dimensions 100 x 100 mm, are removed from their original function after their heavy duty testing and can develop their inherent potential in a new form.   The material and its inherent resistant energy thus form a central component of the sculpture Pythagoras.   The loosely stacking of interlocking iron frames, like a floating assemblage, creates a condensed, tense, sculptural space that preserves its quality through the spontaneous layering of physically present material.   The interaction of used material and its history for a new temporary use of a given basic form forms the essential cornerstone of this intervention.   The reference to the Greek mathematician and inventor of the harmony Pythagoras can certainly be read as a reference to classical sculptural values and techniques for contemporary image productions.   The installation Pythagoras consciously plays with memories and quotes from art history, whereby a haptically tangible sculptural intervention is created in a reduced minimalist imagery.   Pythagoras, the master of the right angle, is subtly honored in this sculptural work.
