About The Artwork

"REFUGEE" is a work by Twagirumukiza, a self-taught painter and sculptor from Rwanda. It is a bas-relief sculpture consisting of 16 different faces arranged in a 4x4 grid. The faces are all white and have a rough texture, crafted from wood. The artist intended to convey diversity, complexity, and humanity through this artwork. Each face has its own expression, character, and story. Some faces are smiling, others are sad, and some are neutral. Some are young, others are old, and some are undefined. Some appear masculine, others feminine, and some androgynous. The artist invites us to gaze upon these faces and contemplate who they are, what they feel, and what they think. Are refugees not human beings? This work is part of his "Exile" series, inspired by his own story of being forced to leave his homeland due to war. It was created in 2008 and measures 60 x 45 cm.

🇬🇧 Passionate about sculpture and painting, I developed my own technique in a self-taught way. I started to exhibit my works to the public during my law studies at the Panthéon Sorbonne University, where I discovered the pleasure of sharing my artistic vision. In 2004, after obtaining my law degree, I deepened my knowledge of sculpture at the Heatherley School of Fine Art in London. Back in France, I continued to train at the Ateliers des Beaux Arts de the city of Paris in 2015, while continuing my artistic creation. I sculpt with different mediums: wood, clay, stone, paper. I let the final shape of the work reveal itself through the sculpting process. I compose my works with several objects, sometimes sculpted at different times. I assemble them harmoniously to express an idea, a feeling, a movement or a sound.
