About The Artwork

ROOTED self portrait 1 of a varied edition of 4 The sculpture is a self portrait made during the pandemic. As an artist I’m used to spending long periods of time alone in my studio so felt hopeful that the enforced isolation of lockdown wouldn’t be too difficult to manage. Initially this did indeed seem to be the case however as the year dragged on I gradually became aware that the extreme lack of any meaningful social interaction was beginning to have an effect. The idea of the portrait was to try and help me explore the effect it was having on me and I think on many other people too. The sculpture is an attempt to articulate the strange sense of detachment and dislocation that set in as the passing of time began to blur. I also really liked the challenge of tying to capture a “likeness” at a time when my sense of identity was feeling particularly fragile. The sculpture is made from a filigree of patinated, etched copper roots which intertwine to form the shell of a human head (based on a 3d scan of my own head). In the centre of the interior space is a miniature copy of the same head electroformed in polished copper. The sculpture sits on a marble base
