About The Artwork

A potent aspect of my life's experience in Africa inspired this work, along with a keen desire to convey the great contradictions of humanity. The work comprises of a hand made Togolese ceramic head, collared by an old British cast iron drain cover, which sits on an antique piece of mahogany flanked by stained glass. This aforementioned assembly stands on a piece of shipwrecked teak, under which is riven slate, under which is carved pieces of wood from Victorian furniture, which is supported by another piece of hardwood & finally a riven slate base. The tiered aspect of the work seeks to be shrine-like in appearance in order to give gravitas to the overall meaning suggested in the title. The overall composition aspires to highlight the social, cultural & psychological biases & inhibitions that still abound in many guises around the world I hope & trust the attracted viewer will empathize & enjoy, Best creative wishes
