About The Artwork

The Intercessor was inspired by the many praying ‘Mamas’ here in South Africa, who have persevered in prayer for our troubled land. The definition of an intercessor is someone who prays, petitions, or begs God in favor of another person. It's a Biblical concept. Here we see a woman, her eyes closed, seated up in the tree praying for the man and woman below who are in ‘dire straits’, almost submerged in water and begging to be rescued. The lions are symbols of strength and power and are there to fight on behalf of those who are weak, a metaphor of Christ. This sculpture raises questions about our fragile relationship between the sacred and the secular and how they subconsciously co-exist, highlighting cultural and spiritual values and beliefs. This art work invites the viewer to reflect and contemplate the beauty and fragility of our existence and to delve deeper into unearthing hidden and timeless truths that point to the existence of God.

Tiffany seeks to combine beauty, emotion and visual storytelling in her works, exploring her subjectivity and connecting with her understanding of the world. She draws inspiration from the natural world and the complexities of the human condition. In her recent work she seeks to highlight the intricate relationships between human beings and their environment, as well as the deep spiritual connections within ourselves and with the world around us. Her ceramic creations develop intuitively and shine a light on important cultural conversations, connecting the current situation with traditional and spiritual values and beliefs. Through the medium of clay, she constructs her sculptures using the ‘press-molding technique’ in combination with hand building techniques. The use of colored under-glazes and glazes are considered carefully for each piece. Her ceramic work is glaze fired to stoneware temperature. (1200 ‘C)
