About The Artwork
The Knife is a wall-hung sculpture inspired by the song of the same name by NYC-based jazz pianist and composer Ben Winkelman. I had the opportunity to ask Ben what the song meant to him, and he explained that it was about a relationship that didn’t end well (don’t worry, no actual knife was involved.) The music is dark and moody, but with glimmers of optimism. The “knife” section of the sculpture is made of roughly plasma-cut stainless steel that has been ground to a fine finish. The body of the piece is made of blocks of cedar which have been glued together to form the basic shape, then carved from there. The wood is finished with a gold metallic-pigmented wax rubbed over a base coat of purple acrylic paint.

I am a sculptor whose works have been exhibited in museums and art galleries throughout the United States. I was born in Detroit, Michigan USA and now work from my studio in Highland Park, Michigan (an enclave of Detroit.) My sculpture is almost entirely abstract. I began working predominantly in clay, and then steel, and more recently I often work in wood. My work is distinguished by my use of contrasting materials, textures, and the juxtaposition of the organic and the industrial. My sculpture is also informed by my work as a graphic designer, a field in which I have also worked steadily.
