About The Artwork

From the series “Reminiscence or Nostalgia?” the sculpture titled, “The Mantle”, intends to evoke the element of Nature - Water - and its relationship with sacred rites. The relationship between water and human life is thus present from the mother's womb, and in all phases of humanity. In most ancient cultures such as Greece, Persia, Babylon, Japan, Tibet or India, this element always had a more philosophical (and even religious) aspect than the others, and although the explanations varied, generally their attributes, were mythologically personified by female deities linked to the symbology of birth, rebirth, purification, as well as protection and death rituals. There are indications of Water as an instrument of worship in Western Europe, in the Bronze Age (3000 BC), going back to the Neolithic period (8000 BC). Currently in Christianity, immersion in water symbolizes baptism, rebirth and liberation from sin, with holy water being the Christian's protection against evil spirits. In Hinduism, the waters are also sacred: the Ganges is paradise, for those who bathe in it or who have their ashes spread on the surface of the river and in the funeral rites of Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism and Islam, water is always present.

I am born in Lisbon in 1960 and I live and work in Palmela. My academic formation, was decisive for my work as a visual artist, once it gave me a better understanding of Space and its mutation in Time, as well as the desire for exploration and experimentation of new materials, I started to make exhibitions as a painter in 96. Over the years, I developed my work through visual and written research on contemporary art. In 2011, I abandoned painting, and I started to investigate human perception of visual elements, within the transparent bi dimensional supports. Now I'm looking for their relationship in sculpture. The main influences in my work, come from observation of nature ( mainly the human nature), the reading of philosophical authors, and a special friendship, with the painter Fernando Calhau. This association of factors in conjunction with intuition and experience, has transforme my first contents of work, in poetic thoughts of philosophical nature, formalize more and more in the sum of many subtractions.
