Thorns and Blossom Sculpture

I was inspired by seeing too many flowing paper pieces in my studio. I needed to add a brutal setting that demands attention. The thorns are welded steel painted blood red. The wood is Eucalyptus coolabah, a dense, unruly and visually arresting species. The tightly rippled surface texture is operatic. Its unstable grain is prone to checking and cracking. It will be in imperceptible motion for years, adding tectonic power to the piece. The base and thorns might evoke Dylan Thomas' "The Force That Through The Green Fuse Drives The Flower." In this case the flower's gentle flow is made by hours of folding, smoothing, twisting and tightening. It feels like working with diva ballerina. Her elegance is born of rare design, toughness and work.
