About The Artwork

With full presence, an awareness for the pur moment, I shaped this piece of clay. The intention was to feel myself while touching the clay to finally invite the viewer to feel themselves by touching the piece. It is a touch piece that invites the audience to interact with it. The instructions by the artist to experience the ceramic wall piece are: Close your Eyes. Breath. Touch with one hand. feel. Touch with the other hand. feel. Her work is informed by her journey as a forced right-hander, including her reflections on the resulting disconnection between body and mind. The artist was born in the former GDR as a left-hander but forced to write with her right hand in school. As an adult (30 years later) she trained herself to write with her dominant hand, which is still does till today. By combining her unique experiences with a deep commitment to process, her work invites the audience to engage with and reflect upon the power of embodied memory and experience. Clay with its body-like characteristics, its willingness to be transformed while remaining true to its nature makes it perfect to draw connections to ones own body, says the artist.

My name is Anke Buchmann. As an artist, my work encompasses sculpture, performance, and audience engagement. My research is concerned with the question of how to preserve and document lived experiences in clay, including memories and performative actions. Synchronising my breath with slowed down gestures I then let my body decide about duration and type of action to transform the clay. I create a dialogue between my body and the material to access memories, thoughts and emotions; resulting in objects that function as documentation of my lived experience - carrying my breath, my touch, my presence. My work is informed by my journey as a forced right-hander, including my reflections on the resulting disconnection between body and mind. By combining my unique experiences with a deep commitment to process, my work invites the audience to engage with and reflect upon the power of embodied memory and experience.
