About The Artwork

As a studio glass designer, glass is my medium. In this I can visualize my visual language, my method of working with glass is as follows. First I ensure that the glass is ground and sieved, so I determine the grain size down to the glass powder; by doing this myself I have control over the entire process; my work always has a tactile appearance. The desired shape is cast in plaster after which it serves as a mold in which to place the glass, grain by grain, with a teaspoon; the whole is placed in the oven to be fused. My work is distinguished by; - Often use monochrome color. - High contrast in the glass by polishing or not. - The form does not determine the function in my work, my objects exist purely in shape and color and are for visual pleasure. In my new work the emphasis is on constructivism. By stacking cylinder, sphere and saucer shapes on top of each other, it looks like a randomness of color, shape and structure, thus increasing the contrast. By using glass as a material you get a new visual language that you cannot get in this way with any other material. My affinity with these people/movement such as; - Oskar Schlemmer with his Triadic Ballet, given my fashion designer background, he has always been of interest to me. - The style. - Fauvism, using bright colors against each other. - Ettore Stottsass Memphis designs also appeal to me in their color, the function is less important than the shape and playfulness. In my older work, The Amsterdam School has often played a prominent role in creating an object, including by stacking found shapes, introducing repetitions and asymmetry. With this tactile glass that always gives off the feeling of being dangerous, cutting you or the feeling of being irresistible to being touched. Amsterdam, May 2020. Carl van Hees.
