About The Artwork
This three-dimensional wall hanging was inspired by a cancer diagnosis in a seemingly healthy person. When asked now she felt, a friend's elderly mother once quipped, "I feel fine, but you never know what's eating at you from inside." The layers of fabric hiding beneath (and sometimes poking through) the shiny exterior of this piece represent all those underlying possibilities.

In the American Midwest where I grew up, my options for self-expression were limited by the ethos of conformity which governed my social world. My first escape was through music. Studying ethnomusicology at UCLA opened my ears to nonwestern music. My works are layered with multiple meanings, juxtapositions that are unusual, pretty, startling, or whimsical. I mix detritus from my neighborhood with inexpensive, easily obtainable materials, using what I find around me to address issues that are part of my world.
