About The Artwork
A sheet of iron, no thicker than a coin, lies in front of a large hydraulic press and my cutting torch. It is as a block of marble to a sculptor or a blank canvas to a painter. I can see the crawling, sorrowful woman in front of me, her hands stretched forward in despair. I light the torch and sparks begin to fly. I want a strong emotion in the hard steel. And what is more intense than fear? Painful, but oh so powerful beyond imagination... I "met" my teacher for this work in a museum in Duisburg. I too want to show the emotion found in his images. I patiently work towards my final result. I sculpt with the forging hammer and paint with my cutting torch. Using heat and brute force I pull this inconsolable woman from a flat sheet of steel into the third dimension. Slowly, she crawls towards life. At the end of the day she has conquered the iron. My energy, my blood, sweat and tears have been transformed into the image: Die Untröstliche.

Three hundred kilos ofsteel, 15 mm thick and as flat as a coin, wait in front of my large hydraulic press and my cutting torch, like a painter's empty canvas, or the empty screen in front of the writer. In this very moment my imagination takes shape and I flash my torch. Each facet of my sculpture achieves its form as I patiently work towards the end result. I sculpt with a forging hammer and paint with my cutting torch – a pure way of working. My workshop on the warf in Heusden stimulates ceation on a large scale. From the moment I arrive in the morning, the clanging of hammers and the wail of grinders become my ringtones. It’s fascinating to see how iron can assume organic shapes, how it can be made soft as a horse’s muzzle. And when you stroke the rump of my zebra, you can feel the curve of it’s firm buttocks.
