About The Artwork

In 2013 I was in a car accident that changed my path as an artist. Previously, I had been a full time sculpture designer and fabricator, and most common works were between six and ten foot. After my accident I was bedridden for many months, had memory issues, and could no longer weld. As I lay in bed, I started working with semi-precious stones, a\nd creating bead wrappings (like small children do). Eventually, over a time-span of a couple of years, I cut copper, formed feathers, and taught myself how to oxy-acetylene weld again. This scul[pture, Warrior, is the first piece I finished after my accident. It took the entire length of my rehabilitation to create all the pieces, and weld together. Each copper band is hammered by hand. I could barely walk out to my home studio. and once I got there only had strength to hammer a few bands per day. Great attention was given to every detail, and much time spent in each design decision. It has been eight years since my accident, and I have taught myself how to weld, use design programs, and run my company again. Once again I am working on large park installations, and my average sculpture is eight to ten foot high. This piece, which marks my return to the art field, however, will always be my favorite.

"My purpose in life is to help others see, feel, & heal through art". Welded Sculpture is Woodford’s passion. Her work is a dialog with organic flow, movement and scale. Woodford grew up on the East Coast in Southern Maryland, but has called the Midwest home for many years. She travels between South Carolina, Iowa, Nebraska, Dallas, and Arizona where she creates, has representation, or teaches. Traveling enables me to teach, be of service to others and broaden my views." The figurative series she creates depicts her thinking on current as well as historical matters and her perceptions from a female viewpoint. The work is inherently autobiographical while also leaving space for the viewer's interpretative dialog. Woodford's goal is to create healing sculptures that embody a sense of hope. "We are all connected. We are all the same, and could see each other as mirrors but for the smoke in-between.”
