We are striped not starred Sculpture

Chess, an intellectual and an intelligent man’s game, presented a different perspective to me, even since I thought of making a hand crafted chess game set. It looked like a game invented based on the colour of the skin of human beings. One set of pieces are white and the other one are black. The white reigns supreme as the positioning of the white king and queen on the board is very important. The black pieces are just adjusted according to the white pieces. The person on the white side always opens the game. Ofcourse, in the end anyone can be a winner, white or black, fair or dark skinned. Which is how life also is-you can be a winner irrespective of the colour of your skin. For preparing this chess set, I chose to mould the pieces in the same manner ,the way I draw the figures on a canvas .The idea of using stars and stripes to denote two categories of people generated in my mind nearly 15 years ago, although it remained only as a sketch. The making of this chess set gave me a chance to translate that idea into a work of art. I still remember my father, who was a chess champion, teaching me in childhood to place the white king on the fourth square from the right.
