WHITE HOUSE, CANYON DE CHELLY Sculpture

This is a faithfully executed rendition of White House, Canyon de Chelly - an ancient cliff dwelling in northeastern Arizomna inhabited by the Anasazi (ancient ones) and abandoned centuries before the Navajo arrived almost a thousand years ago. The voices of children playing in the stream below are echoed in the dwelling above and remind the viewer that the spirits of the ancestors are still there... I visited the site in 2004, photographing the cliff dwelling every 30 minutes from sunrise to sunset to gain the reference images I needed to produce the most realistic effect possible. Three months of carving a large slab of Honduran Mahogany with nothing but a mallet and chisel yielded the dramatic image you see.The hardness and dense grain of the wood lent itself to fine detail and rock - like texture. Unlike clay or wax, each cut was an indelible commitment to the image I couldn't erase or patch. It was a relief in more ways than one when the sculpture was finally finished ! This sculpture is quite heavy and lends itself well to display on a fireplace mantle or strong elevated ledge, and track lighting will yield an amazing effect!
