In the French-Canadian village I grew up in, rather harmless snakes were to be found slithering around in the swamps and woods. They terrified me nevertheless. Where I now live, in the most southern province of Holland, the occasional blind-worm crosses your path every now and then....and I was surprised that the idea of a snake still had that terrifying impact on me.
In these past years I introduced snakes into my work. I hoped that by creating my own snakes I would find a way to be less afraid of them. And such is now the case after having sculpted three of them; two in stone and one in wood (also included in my artworks on this Saathi site). Only last year I was able to look at an adder at close range without having that familiar feeling of me recoiling. I was able to observe the snake as an 'animal' and not some kind of extraordinary species.
The white limestone comes from Normandy, France. the loger it is exposed to the weather the more endurable the surface gets. It is a stone that the French build houses with.
