About The Artwork

Sometimes I like to draw in a coffee shop. I have my books, my phone for online connectivity, and my positive attitude. In the midst of the new mathematical concepts, the anatomy, the physics, the language learning, and the insightful prose, the flashes of inspiration overtake me and freshly sharpened pencil in hand, the forms begin to emerge on paper. Sometimes, the object is relatively complete in a smooth spontaneity but often the thoughts come in regarding the modification and evolution of the loose idea. Wall Hanging Form No.5 was fairly spontaneous. There was a vague feeling of excitement that when pursued resulted in this form. The painted sections and overall contrast were included in the package of impulse. It was all there and the thinking mind was reluctant to create it—a good sign that it was something fresh and alive. Thoughts could not comprehend the ideas fully and therefore did not have the capacity to become totally engaged with the project. I pursued the piece based on that vague feeling of interest I had—almost a curiosity, you might say. This dim light I followed took me on the path of knife-finishing the piece (there is a textured naturalness to the concept) and very uncertainly with the urushi lacquer at the bottom. Only upon the polymerization (curing) of the 3rd coat of lacquer did the piece "pop". In other words, this final form is so sensitive in its aesthetics that any single deviation in the process may have interfered with the "success" of the result. I should like to think that the thinking mind was on such a devilish agenda and it is refreshing to know that this force was actively muted throughout the process. So, here emerges the unadulterated, metaphysical, rather spontaneous and very organic form for the wall. The sculpture consists of two pieces of wood, originally from the same stock, laminated together. It hangs on a #6 screw 1/8th of an inch proud of the wall. There are two hanging plates installed on the back of the piece. The top one is mandatory. The bottom one is optional (in case a slightly different angle or added stability is preferred). It is signed with a pyrograph tool including the year of creation.
