ART NOT ADS Claire Chaulet’s latest series shines a light on the trivialising and normalising nature of problematic everyday images. It invites the viewer to take a moment and for once question these everyday images. The artist’s aim is to encourage reflection on visual pollution, which at first glance doesn’t seem particularly dangerous. Claire puts forward however, that this pervasive visual scene subconsciously damages the quality of our everyday lives by creating fake needs and promoting absurd materialistic ideals. This encouragement of unnecessary consumerism, in turn, encourages the pollution of and damage to the natural world. Utilising different creative techniques, the effect of media saturation and visual pollution in the common domain is reclaimed and transformed. These protest acts of transformation are then reinstalled into urban environments. Thus, not only does the content of the art disturb and disrupt passers-by and their routines but it changes the entire mise-en-scène of the public space.
