About The Artwork

This painting is the third in a series of works inspired by indigenous symbolism. Different types of bird life often appear in a stylized form in native art. Out in the countryside in the summer, I often hear the cry of the loon and have been drawn to it. This mixed media piece was painted using only a small picture of a loon as a starting point. After that I build the rest of the piece around it. My favourite colours, orange, purple, lavender, and red create a dramatic background for the lone Loon. The overall impression I wanted to create was drama and a sense of landscape, namely, mountains, sky and ground. I am not a native Canadian but was asked by some people if I had a connection to their culture. Sadly, I do not but I can still use my imagination and bits of collage and evoke the magic of British Columbian artwork.

Myra Evans is a visual artist living and working in Toronto, Canada and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. After retiring from a long, rewarding career as a high school teacher and administrator, Myra discovered the joys of painting, especially using water media. After 15 years of creating impressionistic water colour portraits, she is now experimenting with acrylics, pastels ,hand made paper, collage/texturizing techniques, inks and watercolours. Exploring abstraction using figurative images with alternative mediums has been an on-going adventure. Her time and energy has been focused on developing as a painter. Art making for Myra is a life long process.
