"Two Art Collectors Take a Break" was inspired by a newspaper article about an American couple who loved art and bought what they liked and could afford. They started buying in the 1930s and now enjoy some rare pieces. I like the photograph of this quiet elderly couple sipping coffee seated at a modernist style coffee table surrounded by impressive art. I imagine them in a Manhattan apartment looking towards high rise buildings with a huge television screen projecting the latest art shows (see Super Woman, top middle section). In the top left you can see a huge clock with numbers springing out of control emphasising the fast pace outside this peaceful apartment. The painting is made up of small paintings depicting interiors and exteriors. Vertical and horizontal lines create a sense of compartments and movement . This adds energy through discord and draws the viewer back to the gentle couple, again creating a balance between unease and harmony. In this work I began by making random marks with a wax candle as my drawing tool and outlining shapes with black ink. I used this time to build a scene for the art collectors and placed them to the bottom left of the scene. I chose to draw these figures with the minimum of fuss but applied Letraset Avant Garde on the man's shirt. This is my accolade to what seems to be a remarkable couple. Collage strips of black paper and black ink along with Letraset is used in parts to create architectural focal points.

Please visit me on : www.mariannesturtridge.com I am an art teacher by profession and enjoy the constant challenges of "problem solving" and frustration that goes with art. Teaching art has encouraged me to experiment with new approaches and draw from a history of art knowledge. My paintings seek to convey a range of human feelings from community to alienation, sometimes with a religious, mythological or fantasy theme. While teaching children with physical disabilities I explored themes on attitudes towards disability, illness and censorship. The foundation of my work is drawing, often evolving into mixed media. My painting style ranges from traditional oil and watercolour painting to experimental work in a wide range of materials including computer-based art, bas-relief and ceramics. Alongside painting I have made clay sculptures including torsos and shoes. I use my life drawings as a starting point when making clay torsos and try to capture something of the person in this work.
