Collage of vintage wallpaper from the 1920s on a cradled wood panel. Over the years the dyes from the wallpaper forming the central band bled onto the reverse of the paper that was pasted over it. The top and bottom bands are the reverse side of that wallpaper. When inspected closely the surface shows multiple signs of distress and lacerations while in relief there is a barely discernible one word response to the title. The wood and paper have been treated to archival standards to preserve the colours of the paper. The wood has been sealed, the paper coated on both sides with Golden medium and the collage protected with Golden UV varnish. The collage wraps over the sides of the wood panel and requires no frame. The picture has been wired and is ready to hang. Signed on the reverse with description and title.

You’ll usually see me thinking about composition, playing with pattern and testing spatial relationships, that sort of thing. As for anything else I think about how it affects all the above. I enjoy looking for unlikely structures and trying out fleeting interractions. The question of balance is never far away. When it comes to meaning, the torn and faded materials in my collages show where man has been. I suppose everything reflects an unidealised view of humanity. But I’m also attracted to the opposite, the wide expanses of nature (especially the sea) where there’s not much humanity at all. My influences may not be apparent… I keep coming back to Cézanne and Matisse.
