About The Artwork

Looking at this classic 19th century space, I was especially interested in how the birdcage ironwork marched toward the glare of the outside world. Gare d'Austerlitz sends trains toward the Loire, Toulouse, Cahors, Barcelona. Warm places. But its interior is cool and calm. It's the moment before you embark on the adventure. Before the mysterious passengers board the train and begin casting furtive glances at each other. Unlike most interiors people enter this space to leave it. The volume is different than a cathedral, broader, but the structure is similar. It has its own rituals, which are practical. The exterior is pompous, but the interior is almost austere, iron tracery and glass and air and steam. Rail barns are where Europe became cosmopolitan.
