View In My Room
This charcoal and white chalk drawing on paper is a portrait of my son gazing out to sea. I grew up by the ocean, and it still represents freedom to me. The future has been so hard to imagine while the world crumbled at our feet, and so much of life was lived within walls during this pandemic. With this drawing, I wanted to breathe that freedom again. The drawing is also about my son's gaze out to the sea, his profile as a young man still bearing the slight curve of a child's cheek, the curve of his body both here and yearning to be out there, toward a future that I cannot see. I chose the medium of chalk and charcoal because of the velvety black and milk white it affords, allowing me to reduce the image to only the essential.
