Made of Tough Stuff Print

Tennessee Williams wrote that “The purpose of art is to make eternal the desperately fleeting moment”. When I think about why I felt compelled to draw this incredible creature whom I saw at the Auckland Zoo, it is a somewhat vain stab at trying to preserve the fleeting moment we have left to save these creatures, our planet and ourselves. The White Rhino is a critically endangered species. In spite of its size, strength and tough thickened hide, it is vulnerable. I have spent much of my life trying to develop a thick skin in order to be less vulnerable and yet it is clear that this alone is no answer to salvation, that can only come when we all work together to preserve our environment and show love and care for all who inhabit our planet. It strikes me as ironic that the strongest of creatures are some of the most vulnerable to the mess we are making of our planet on our own path to self destruction. Let the White Rhino be a mirror to us all, you are never going to be big enough, strong enough, tough enough or old enough to be invincible, but you will always have the capacity to care and to take the steps we all need to help preserve our world.
