About The Artwork

Uninterrupted Stare - Daemons, 2014 by Nina Sumarac UNINTERRUPTED STARE is the most desirable voyeuristic basic principle, and that is the name that Nina Sumarac Jablonsky gave to her cycle of drawings which she has been ‘hewing, hacking, and carving” like a grand study for some future artistic leap. And so this very cycle of drawings is in itself a leap in relation to Nina’s previous artistic pursuits in her expression and creative foundation. When you stand in front of these drawings, you feel like an explorer of a time that has leaked out and is being held captive in some dusty Kafkan archive, or left as a legacy from the transition process of a post-Soviet, Middle and Eastern Europe. Yet they look as if they were just recently taken out of an attic trunk from some Musil's people ; as if they were buried there in, let’s say 1913, only to be frozen in the same state before the epoch of the First World War. Or like a folder of some future European Smithsonian who will testify against the shock, awe, astonishment, and immobility of one moment to go on with its civilizational step forward. And in front of us, in its archeological deposits which the artist layers so well, we observe a great sadness and hopelessness of their nullified lives. Like every other revolutionary commotion, that process is recorded moment by moment, in its segmented and revelatory, surreal maze. The artist concocts for us this museum of lost opportunities and unimagined dreams like exceptional psychosocial studies, evoking a brilliant observance and an excellent technique that, with its decisive and inevitable strokes, is close to expressionistic wood and linocut. Undisturbed in the comfort of her voyeuristic position, she testifies to the wide variety of emotional conditions of her characters, coloring them in almost literary tones. Moving with conceptual deliberation and using a strong expressionistic illustration, the artist attires her entire work with the surreal atmosphere of all her psychological and philosophical standpoints. And, perhaps, her Stareless characters stare back at us, mysteriously and surrealistically, in their own quiet voyeurism, as if they are preparing their own testimonials about us ‘here’, placing us in their folder of hopelessness? It is not too early to anticipate the new exhibition of Nina Sumarac Jablonsky; this kind of fresh, unpretentious strength is out of the ordinary. B.Milinkovic read more on www.ninasumarac.com
