About The Artwork
This piece was made with chinese black ink and simple bamboo sticks on a backlit paper. Fascination for this simple yet dynamic and powerful technique has roots in my appreciation of Eastern philosophies, oriental art of calligraphy and painting. During my lighting design studies I experimented with different materials and started painting over backlit paper and vegetal paper, exploring their unique texture, transparency and additional meanings. Between 2006 and 2010 I made over 1000 of drawings inspired by concepts of female identity, solitude and transition.

Artist and photographer, Magdalena focuses on landscape and space perception, working with concepts, cultural and social experiences. With a solid background in urban design, photography and intercultural relations, she applies a multidisciplinary approach in her work and research. Inspired by the environment and natural phenomena Urbanska uses drawing, installation, photography and text as main tools, connecting research and intuitive visual languages. Her practice has been evolving toward a personal and organic vision within a range of ideas based around place-making and trans-identity. Originally from Poland, Urbanska currently works and lives in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
