About The Artwork
Like every satiric table arrangement this drawing owes a debt to Saul Steinberg, and to the artists who Steinberg was satirizing and/or celebrating. This drawing is one of many I did while devising serial spots for the New Yorker. For some reason, closely held in the New Yorker offices, it was never used, but it's a theme I return to frequently. The tools of a trade, the arrangement of totems. Totem arrangements, of course, were a fetish of Freud's, so there is that aspect here too. Our collections map our pathologies. Items standing in for word associations.
