About The Artwork

During the creative process, I saw a head and a snake appear. Subconscious or not, I happened to be reading a work on Greek mythology around the same time, this led me to nurture the work in the direction of some kind of Medusa. As with a lot of my work, there is this clearing of the waters where the theme and subject become apparent during the making. The whole thing becomes way more fun for me, as I have no way of knowing, in advance, where it is heading. My son informs me that the figures of the painting are sitting at the edge of the world. I liked that. So, it became part of the title. I feel there was a great leap during this work, into the stylistic direction I wish to head towards. A rougher, less refined, more confident brushwork that works for me as more expressive and displaying human qualities.

My work, though 2D, embodies a sculptural, organic, and expressive quality, delicately balancing on the line between the rational and non-rational mind. The process commences with a purely intuitive exploration guided by emotion, energy, and an innate urge to express. As I progress, I transition towards perceptive, deductive thought processes, shaping the lines into coherent forms that reveal meaningful shapes—whether fantastical or closer to the banal. This transformative journey seeks to tease loose, expressive forms into a meaningful narrative or an expressive apparition. For me, this artistic endeavor is a spiritual practice, deliberately avoiding the intrusion of intellect to preserve the purity of expression. Influences abound, drawing from architecture, natural forms, nature's dynamics, the stillness of meditation, anthropology, and the rich diversity of world cultures. I aspire for my lines to exist in tension, oscillating between what Cy Twombly described as the childlike line and the masterful, physically controlled draughtsman's line. In my exploration of color, which comes into play following the drawing phase, I am deeply interested in the relationship between color, fascinated by the clashes, balances, conflicts, and harmonies that color and color-temperature can generate. This exploration extends to the contrast between roughly and smoothly painted areas, where humanly felt expressively rough parts interplay with refined, considered smooth parts. My art-making process also encompasses a subversive streak, finding joy and a sense of freedom by challenging even the rules I set for myself. Simultaneously, I harbor a deep sense of obligation, admiration, and appreciation for the past masters who have paved the way. Yet, beneath the surface, there is more to my creative ethos. I have always been drawn to, and fascinated with, the powerful energy emanating from artworks. It is a force I feel intensely, and my creative desire is anchored within this realm of energy. Sometimes, my work will contain elements of humor or absurdity, as they are very real parts of life at times. Currently on a nomadic journey across the world, I am immersed in diverse cultures, blending the handmade with digital art for portability as an artist. This fusion allows me to absorb cultural inspiration and embrace the challenge of personal growth.
