About The Artwork

It's necessary, as a artist, to be always seeking new forms of expression, to learn from and develop the skills and vision honed over the years, and to move on. So... I've been painting and developing new skills this past year. I've used glass, paint, drawing and digital tools for many years in my artworks: I've found new ways to combine them in creating these works. I've called them 'Crushed glass' works because I cannot completely escape my love for glass, it's brightness, smoothness - and sharpness! This work is based on a slab of glass I cast over a bed of rocks, letting the glass trickle down through the rubble, picking up colour as it flowed. It's a dramatic interpretation of the creation of the sky and sea in the Bible: "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters". The chaos of churning and breaking of the world's oceans that this passage presupposes would have been unimaninably immense...

Tony Roberts was born in Kent in 1946. His professional career as an artist started early, working with pen and brush as a young monk. Now, in retirement and long out of monastic life, his artistic practice has greatly expanded, including glass sculptures and canvas works in private and public collections worldwide, mostly to commission. Much of his current work involves multiple disciplines and media in each single work.
