About The Artwork

On a Vanity Fair I read this grand dame's interview in the 90s and saw her dignified posture with elegance and confidence based on a life well lived with proud sense of self and was moved by her elegance and strength. I immediately proceeded to paint her in hope to capture her elegant and poised sense of confidence. She inspires all women who are forced to feel apologetic for aging and losing their youthful ammunition- the shield that they are conditioned by the youth-focused culture in America and most other parts of the world to feel tenuously protected. The fleeting qualities of youth and the beauty are considered the premium and a value as a woman even in this day and age. And it is refreshing if not reassuring for the rest of us women to view a symbol of elegant defiance like this grand dame who can sit and smoke and drink with ease and sense of self irregardless of the signs of aging in her boney body, not hiding her blood veins, sagging skin or the fine lines in her proud visage. She is timeless and beautiful.
