About The Artwork

I was inspired by a fantastic photo from Ricardo Stuckert, a famous photographer who frequently works with indigenous subjects. These children where photographed in the village of Apiwtxa. 70% of the sales of this work will go to the emergency relief fund of the Ashaninka (https://ashaninka.fund). When painting it, I started noticing many small details in the original reference; the paint on the finger of the boy in the back, the way the girl on the right hides her hand, the purplish light at the right versus the children straight in the sunlight on the left, the way the boy in the back is held back by what is to happen, his feather extending his spine, the gaze of the young woman at the left directly at the photographer, one of leadership and fearlessness, the partly worn nail paint applied on both girls. All four children have their own specific character. I hope that this painting invites to read more about the Ashaninka, their history and their culture.

I'm an artist from Rotterdam. In daytime I work with technology, after working hours and in weekends I spend my time painting. I mostly like realist paintings, particularly the ones that have a subconscious element to it. I like to look at paintings for a long time, discovering specific cues in expressions, movements, poses and from there colors, color harmonies. In my own works I also like to take the time to discover the subjects, what works and where to exaggerate a bit and where to diminish.
