About The Artwork

A portrait of two historical figures who despite Barbarossa lived 200 years before Mary Read both names are synonymous with courage, independence and freedom. Mary Read was an exceptional pirate, raised as a boy and died very young, she made the history of piracy in just 31 years of life. Before she fought in the Dutch navy as a soldier, when the warship was attacked by pirates she decided to join the buccaneers. So Mary Read became a full-fledged pirate and fighting hard on Calico Jack's ship earning the respect of the other pirates. Barbarossa, or rather Aruj Barbarossa, was instead a Turkish corsair who successfully attacked the Christian trade ships with fast fustas (small galleys) in alliance with the Tunisian hafids. In 1515 the Emir of Algeria asked Aruj for help in the fight against the Spaniards. Aruj expelled the Spaniards from Algeria, shortly thereafter killed the Emir and appointed himself the new ruler of Algeria.

I was born in 1982 in Salerno, Italy, where I grew up as well. I visited the Art Institute "Filiberto Menna”. In my teenage years I started as a street artist, using sprays to express myself upon the walls of my home town. In 2008 I went abroad and spent two years in Spain, where I actually started to paint on canvas. 2010 I went back to Italy and lived in different cities, like Milan, Salerno and Rome.
