About The Artwork
The intersection of light, water and color create an interesting backdrop to my work. Bold vibrant and saturated colors are a dominate characteristic coupled with the white spaces left behind, Layers of light and color are the foundation for all of the Sarasota Series. This piece was inspired by a visit the the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. I reach toward a loose yet bold style that uses saturated color as a base for the representational parts of the composition. The bright white of the paper itself is used as a part of the color palette and the negative spaces left after the stroke work is laid down. This piece is fresh and bold, modern and timeless. There are twelve individual pieces created to represent various flora, fauna and experiences around the Sarasota along the Gulf of Mexico. This bright electric greens of the lily pads and the bold strokes of prussian blue anchor this piece. The painted butterflies intertwine with the three dimensional butterflies to create the composition. The tropical vibes are underscored by the colors and the theme.

Influences include Impressionistic masters such as Monet, Bonnard, Picasso, and Van Gogh. I call upon vibrant color brushwork and light to translate places, animals, and abstract ideas onto canvas and paper. Creating two distinct planes of light and color, I use light leaks, shape, color, saturation and shape to expose wonder. I work with acrylic washes, inks, pencils, gel mediums, and glosses to create texture and movement. In addition to representational work, I create semi abstract paintings that revolve around a central color. Aiming for a meditative, calm abstract style that is simultaneously timeless and modern.
