About The Artwork

This oil painting was commissioned for my old friend and customer from Ireland. I received a photo where the Benya River cargo ship was printed on a computer mouse pad. I studied the archival materials of the ship, photos, and a week later the picture was already ready. After, after 2 weeks, the painting dried up and took its course to Ireland. Today it adorns the picturesque collection of a passionate lover of maritime history. The classical general cargo ship was developed in the second half of the 19th century. They followed the technical evolution of the steam engines that eventually allowed for ships to stop using sails all together. The masts were now fully free to serve as derricks and the deck was open to have large hatches that allowed for the cargo to be loaded/unloaded much faster than ever before. This technique ruled maritime logistics for about a century, until the container started to take over as a more efficient way of cargo handling during the 1970s.
