This one is mostly painted with my non-dominant hand. Due to surgery and radiation, I've lost a bit of mobility and stamina in my arm, but I am working around that as this series develops. From my series "Crossing the Lines", which was painted while undergoing treatment for breast cancer. The landscape and peaceful depth of the river in this one is very soothing, the lines and drips comingle to form interesting patterns. There is a feeling of being at a crossroads where these lines meet. It aptly reflects the overall outlook these days, both in the world and in my own microcosm. Interestingly enough, once this painting was completed, I lost my grip on it, and it fell, but not before hitting a corner and putting a tear in it. I was heartbroken, but decided to fix it and keep it. When repairing it, I was reminded of the Japanese art of kintsugi, or the view of wabi-sabi. And though it's not mended with gold, I resonate with the metaphor of embracing our flaws and imperfections.

Globally collected artist Deb Breton is an abstract expressionist artist living & working in Northern California, U.S. Hi, I’m Deb, In school, I was that quirky kid who was always drawing during English Literature class, or backstage painting sets for the Drama Department. At the top of my “career,” I was an artist for notable clients Nestle, Warner Brothers, and the Dali Museum. But I was not happy with the corporate hustle. So, I picked up woodturning, which eventually led me full circle back to painting. You will find me in my studio working with acrylics, oils, ink, and spray paint. My tools are oftentimes things like sponges, flowers, branches, and squeegees. I tend to break many of the rules that I was taught in art. But the hardest thing for me to learn was how to step out of my own way and let creativity flow. My art reflects my scattered mind —inspired by life, nature, the universe and sometimes even the beat of my playlist. It is extremely difficult for me to stay on script—my ADHD ensures that. Luckily, I find peace and calm in painting. Art is a reminder for us to honor our authentic selves in a world that often tries to box us in.
