About The Artwork
To create this painting, I was inspired by "El Pescador" (The Fisherman) by Joaquín Sorolla, a costumbrista scene from the early 1900s. Today, 120 years later, the young man with the hat is picking up old plastic nets from fishing boats, reflecting the pollution in our seas. The scene can be seen as a reminder of the dirt that inundates the Mediterranean, but it is also a hymn to hope as we observe the young man taking action and cleaning it up. Para realizar esta pintura me inspiré en "El Pescador" de Joaquín Sorolla, una escena costumbrista de principios de 1900. Hoy, 120 años después, el joven del sombrero recoge viejas redes plásticas de embarcaciones pesqueras, reflejando la contaminación en nuestros mares. La escena puede ser vista como un recordatorio de la suciedad que inunda el Mediterráneo, pero también es un canto a la esperanza al observar al joven tomando acción y limpiándolo.

"I paint so as not to get depressed, I look for recreate the sensations I feel underwater, as a way to reconstruct that place, sometimes of security and serenity, and others of vulnerability and loneliness. I compose my images with few elements to provide visual rest: a few colours and one or two figures, which are often the same character and her reflection or alter ego. I use photography as a starting point, most of the time images that I take myself. Before painting I like to study the proportion of the figure, I draw a grid that helps me place it on the support exactly in the place I want and I draw it quite detailed. Then I paint with acrylic, due to its fast drying, the strokes do not lose spontaneity." Ana Patitú was born in 1982, in Argentina. She is currently living in Barcelona.
