Abbey Rosko's ghostly oil paintings distill nineteen-forties musical film imagery into fading scenes that investigate stage elements present in the then-relatively new motion-capturing medium. Subject matter consists of images mined from The Harvey Girls (1946) and Meet Me In St. Louis (1944), among other films. Rosko re-imagines the scenes without the stars, replacing the Hollywood stage-settings with garlands of foliage and transparent color fields. Faces of remaining characters drift in shallow screens of murky tones. Rosko’s works are created by using a reductive process in which she presses paper onto ultra sheer layers of oil paint to create static glitch-like film spaces.
