About The Artwork

“Grief Reimagined” (diptych)(commissioned) Oil on Canvas, 20″ X 34″ “Grief” (bottom) Oil on Canvas, 20″ X 24″ Under the mass of heavy thoughts, Enveloped by the darkest mood, My body’s being crushed. I cannot move. “Relief” (top) Oil on Canvas, 20″ X 10″ I’ve seen the pain. I’ve understood its meaning. It’s time to fly away, It’s time to disappear. Youtube video that shows how the painting was created: https://youtu.be/jYAOgXnGtmw The story behind the commission: A few months ago I was contacted by Christine Kortbein, the co-author of the upcoming book “Grief Reimagined: 50 Creative Strategies to Build Resilience”, together with Catherine Tyink. She asked me if I would be interested in creating an artwork to become a design for a book cover. I readily agreed. Christine explained what the book is all about and sent me a few sample stories from the book to inspire my creative process. At first, the bottom part was created as an improvised scene, which symbolically depicts the phenomenon called “grief”. After seeing the progress of the improvised artwork, Christine thought that it will be a good idea to add a bird as a second part to symbolize the release from grief, and she asked me if that would be possible. That’s how the originally thought of as one-piece artwork became a diptych. The second (top) part was more of the design rather than an improvised scene. I wanted to make sure that the bird figure will work well with the bottom part of the diptych. Book info: When confronted with loss, each of us benefits from engaging in meaningful activities and events that bring closure. This book provides novel strategies that readers can use to find meaning, process grief, and accept and build upon the memories that often accompany loss. Against the backdrop of photographs and artwork, this book presents 50 real-life stories to help readers work through loss – including examples that are often not recognized as sources of grief. Artist Statement: Psychological symbolism by Alex Lavrov Observing the workings of psyche. Peeking into the mind. Feeling my way through the darkness. Chasing the dimmest of lights. Digging deeper and deeper In order to understand “the self”. It is a bottomless pit, dammit! There’s no end to the depth. Uncovering the ancient truths. Discovering brand new paths. Is there a point to this adventure? Who’s to decide?! Bio: My name is Alex Lavrov and I'm a visual artist. I work mainly with oils on canvas and I use improvisation as my main method for creating art. Which means I don't pre-plan what an artwork will look like in advance, rather the subjects of my paintings unfold by themselves during the creative process. In 1997, when I was 16, I had to leave Ukraine, where I was born and grew up, and went to Israel as a student. In the end it turned out to be a permanent move. The detachment from family and friends and the culture shock of the unfamiliar environment proved to be quite a challenge. If before the immigration I was only somewhat involved in arts, in those days art became an integral part of my life, it helped me to deal mentally with the challenges of daily life and to process the emotional struggles. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that my art career was born out of pain. Since those difficult times though, my involvement in art developed into something else, more of a tool for self-knowledge, a tool for understanding the workings of the mind. In 2007 I permanently moved to Canada and currently live and work in Vancouver, BC. It's probably worth mentioning that when I was 15 I began to discover and to explore various philosophies and religions of the world. As I grew older though my interests shifted more towards psychology and recently I had become captivated by the available literature on neuroscience. My intent as an artist is to share with others my insights into the subjects of psychology and philosophy depicted through the symbolic imagery in my artworks.
