About The Artwork

"In the Wake of Mars" Artist: Mikus Kalniņš Oil on stretched canvas Size: 60 x 40 cm (~23.6 x ~15.75") Year: 2021 "In the Wake of Mars" is a surreal painting that combines the mythos of Roman mythology and speaks a new narrative into existence. At first, an idea formed and the reference photo was found (sculpture in Agrigento, Sicily). After that a digital sketch was created and the first steps of the underpainting on canvas followed. The underpainting was done using turpentine and a bit of oil to lightly capture the shapes and shadows. Then the underpainting started evolving and became more saturated, the colors and shapes were approaching the final image. Lights and shadows were accentuated, heavier coats of paint were applied on the lightest areas and the sides of the canvas followed suit. Finally, the brightest highlights were applied and a signature and year of creation was placed upon the canvas. And thus the painting was done. It seemed only right to incorporate something involving the Roman mythos into the title since the reference photo used was a roman sculpture. Furthermore the landscape just begs to be interpreted as the surface of Mars, which in turn reminds us of the Roman god of war. Through the prism of the title one can peer into the impacts of war on human life, art and culture. Therefore it shall be called "In the Wake of Mars".

I study program engineering since 2017 in the Computing Faculty of University of Latvia, but art is my dream and creation is my purpose. I remember myself taking art seriously since 2012. Studied painting under the guidance of Dita Luse, and drawing from Svetlana Narkevica and Viktors Ledovskis. Mostly I focus on painting and black and white graphic arts. In my art career I have worked with a science journal for kids "Ilustreta Junioriem" and by doing black and white graphical orders. Oil, as an artistic self-expression medium, came into my life somewhat recently, because up until now I had only painted still life, but on year 2020 the time came to create something creative and original - and so, by uniting my drawing and graphic art knowledge and oil techniques, my latest and so far my greatest works have come to be. The paintings are accompanied by an exploration of the relationship of hue and brightness of colour, but these painting also have reality encountering the supernatural, sometimes even the mythical. Mostly these features are embodied in colourful portraits and faces portrayed in different abstract realities. By looking into these painted eyes, one can look into a piece of themselves.
