ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The payphone, deep rooted and permanent, connected people who may not have otherwise been able to have a phone of their own. It was a link to a vast social network. Past movie stars’ history include the payphone booth as their office; careers launched by using the public phone to their advantage. As a kid, this was the last place you stopped before calling home for a ride. When I moved to Toronto, the pay phone was my link to the past and my future. Eventually, a pocket size phone would replace it and then a hand held computer. Now we make calls as if acting out a scene from Star Trek via FaceTime or Skype. When I see a payphone, it is still science fiction. It is a time machine by way of memory.

Canadian Artist Randy Hryhorczuk is a self-taught oil painter creating vibrant abstract art and subject based still life and landscape paintings. His paintings have been featured on Interior Design TV programs and Home Decor magazines. He has shown publicly at art galleries and fairs since 2000 in Canada, The United States and Germany. His artwork can be found in private and corporate collections in Canada, USA, Great Britain and Guatemala. Randy currently paints at his home studio and is represented by contemporary art galleries in Toronto. Randy grew up in the wild, rural countryside of British Columbia’s lower mainland. As a child he enjoyed drawing pictures, and began taking art seriously in high school. Inspired by the work of Attila Richard Lukacs he chose oil painting as his primary medium. Following high school, he lived in the city of Vancouver where he saw Jean Michel Basquiat's work in person for the first time. Seeing this work inspired him to push himself to take new risks in subject and form. Eventually Randy rented his first art studio before moving to Toronto, Ontario to focus on a career in art. While initially focussed on figure painting, Randy's admired the abstract energy of De Kooning, Rothko and Pollock which influenced the earliest trips into abstraction. In 2007, Randy relocated to Guatemala City, Guatemala with his wife for 2 years. This period was spent drawing, painting, reading, visiting museums and traveling throughout Central America; frequently returning to Canada for art exhibitions and deliveries. Randy's time is devoted to creating art and supporting the efforts of other artists; believing that a strong creative community is a successful one. www.hryhorczuk.com
