Folk Project Ukraine - the main mission of our project is to tell and to show the world the unique world of Ukrainian folklore. _______________________________________ MAVKA "The whisper of the wind in the steppe herbs brought a beautiful song from the world of the mortals. The breathtaking aroma of the wildflowers was as tender and innocent as I used to be. You won't see me coming down to you from with the mountains mists, my beloved! Look at my snow-white dress, at my smooth and silky hair, at my beauty and grace that makes every flower look pale. And I will never turn my back to you, and you would never know I am Mavka, would never see my dead heart, and would never be able to crush it. My beloved, I will take you to the lost valley in the highland, so that you play your simple song for me and my sisters all night long. So that we will be reminded of the warmth of the human body. I will never be yours forever. My home is in the fields, forests, and mountains, among grasses and flowers, birds, and wild animals. My beloved, your tricks will not keep me in the human world, for I am more afraid of the imprisonment than of Chugaister. Dance with us this night, don't look back and forget a way home forever. That is the best night for you and does it matter if it is the last one?" Mavka (or Nyavka) - in pre-Christian beliefs, a female spirit of nature who lived in the woods, mountains, and fields. Some believed that Mavkas were dead young girls. They are very beautiful and seductive. But if you look behind their back, you can see the internal organs - the lungs and the dead heart. Mavkas often tempt young men and take them away to the mountains and woods to entertain themselves. Sometimes, if Mavka liked the guy she could let him go, still not everyone was able to find their way home. And even those, who returned got sick and often died. The Mavkas are very afraid of Chugaisters, who hunt and eat them.

Ukraine
I'm a self-taught artist and illustrator from Kyiv, Ukraine. I find my inspiration in the dark aesthetics, gothic, witchcraft and victorian England style. I spent my childhood in a picturesque little town at the seaside that was full of legends and myths. From a young age, I got carried away by the scary tales of the Grimm brothers, and by the stories of Poe, Lovecraft, and Ann Rice. All this has influenced my art. I paint with different art media, but my heart belongs to watercolor. For a long time I fought with myself because of watercolor. Watercolor should be light, airy, weightless. I didn’t succeed, I scolded myself, tried again and again. And only recently I finally accepted that my watercolor is different. And this is good. It’s mine, it’s about me. My watercolor is heavy, massive, dark and gloomy. It’s swampy, poisonous and haunted. There is no place for lightness and airiness in my watercolor - it's my own dark haunted world.
