About The Artwork

This painting is part of a set of experiments I did when making my own canvas, with different textiles. Sometimes I like to paint over a pre-defined pattern. This pictorial experience puts me in a very different situation that the "white canvas" represents. Painting for me cannot start from something white, which does not exist. When one person is born, he or she is placed in a very specific context, with unique demands and conditions. In this painting, starting from a pre-defined background, I built with acrylic paint, an abstract reality, defragmentation, as if it were a state of mind. There are states of mind in which we feel defragmented, as if we needed a beacon to guide us in life. Here even the flowers are strange, they are too big and shapeless. The letter of hope and love will guide us to this beacon. All of us at some moments in life need a beacon, one that guides us and makes us believe in our capacity and strength.

Vera Fonseka is an artist based in Portugal whose paintings have been widely exhibited nationally. She describes her works as conveying the paradoxical existence between the scrupulous intricacy of the details and the brutality of iconography. Fonseka's artistic process is marked by her use of mixed techniques with adhesives, fabrics, acrylics, and oils on canvas. She was born in 1982 in Tallinn (ex URSS, actually Estonia) in an actors-family. In 2003 Vera moved to Portugal where she's been living since then. Inspired by Kandinsky, Frank Stella, Beatriz Milhazes and Alexandra Mir, Vera Fonseka tries to make conceptual contribution in Contemporary Art. Artist Statement: « Inspired by the disorder of the present time. »
