About The Artwork

The work is inspired by the Moorish Royal Palace in Seville: the colonnade leading from the palace to the gardens shows beautiful mosaic ornamentation, on the masonry balustrades between the columns. The stylization emphasizes the beauty and balance of the colors and shapes. Several layers of acrylic paint give a rich texture: The paint is selectively removed again, thus the lower and upper layers blend together. Like earth layers with a semi-weathered tiled floor on the surface. The tones of color are unique, created after specific color studies. The Moorish ornament is particularly balanced (shapes, proportions, colors) and the 'Mudéjar style' has something timelessly beautiful. It is this "ancient timeless beauty", at the sight of which my heart always rises, which I intend to expose on the canvas to the viewer. In this particular painting with straws randomly scattered on it.

"I feel an inner drive to paint and got the feeling: ‘I have to do this’. In everyday life and while traveling, I see ‘beauty’ in incidental semi-weathered motifs." The combination of a graphic eye and painterly connection to her surroundings form the foundation for Isa Huss' creative practice. One of her main sources of inspiration, the Moorish, adds a distinctive dimension: Including themes, color palettes and the special atmosphere of her compositions. Her methodology is characterized by traces of weathering, modeled by nature. She creates filigree structures on canvas with numerous layers of paint and selectively removes them again. The elaborate working method shows her concern to capture the subject both in terms of content and sculpture. As you approach the artwork, the delicate contrasts become apparent. At the same time, a harmonious result is revealed from a distance. The enlarged depiction of detailed sections of a motif figuratively stands for a closer look in general. Life leaves marks and scratches, which the artist intentionally emphasizes on the canvas. She is concerned with capturing the individual energy during the act of painting: Whether calm & concentration with a fine brushstroke or joy and strength with an energetic impulse. What is special about Huss' art is this link of accuracy and expressiveness.
