Zakhar Shevchuk's "Mountains at Sunset," an oil on canvas measuring 40x50x2 cm, is a 2020 creation that revels in the in-between spaces of semi-abstract and expressionistic art. Intricately textured, the painting employs vigorous brushstrokes to build up the surface, adding depth to both the blue of the sea and the dark red of the mountain rocks. Set against a backdrop of sunlit hues, the water is an arresting blend of blues and whites, rippling under the tones of a setting sun. The mountains, in contrast, are depicted in darker reds with black contours, effectively capturing the reflective essence of the sunset. This painting is another addition to Zakhar’s ongoing exploration of the human perception of reality through art. What initially seems abstract transforms into a discernible landscape upon closer inspection, all thanks to the genius composition and placement of just a few lines. Zakhar Shevchuk, a young professional painter and draftsman, has always been intrigued by the magical interplay between the sea and mountains, a theme he revisits often in his work. This piece, like much of his portfolio, serves as an emotional and visual gateway to a realm where form meets feeling, urging the viewer to challenge their own perceptions.

Art, to me, is a profound exploration of the world that surrounds us - a journey of discovery, experience, and self-understanding. It is a medium through which I unravel the essence of things - their colors, forms, and the interplay between them. I believe in the power of simplicity, in the art of removing the excess and uncovering the necessary, much like a sculptor chisels away at stone. In my paintings, I strive to distill forms to their purest essence, reaching a point where nothing else can be removed without sacrificing meaning. The "necessary" elements, as I perceive them, remain, serving as conduits for my impressions and self-reflections on the subject at hand. My aim is not to depict something specific but rather to transfer the emotions and thoughts evoked by the object onto the canvas. I seek artistic forms that can boldly and vividly capture the essence of these feelings, rather than mere visual representation. In this pursuit, my work often exists on the precipice between figurative and abstract art - place where emotions take precedence over strict visual interpretation. Through my art, I invite viewers to embark on their own contemplative journeys, to interpret the subtleties and engage with the interplay of emotions and forms. Each brushstroke carries the weight of my perceptions, inviting you to join me in this exploration of the human experience. zakhar@klossart.com
