It's from my own reference photo taken in Florence, Italy, and it represents, at least partially, three of the four marble horses of Neptune's fountain started in the 16th century. The horses seem to be jumping out of the water and pulling Neptune's throne. This fountain is situated in Piazza della Signoria, in front of the Palazzo Vecchio. The fountain was commissioned in 1565 and is the work of the sculptor Bartolomeo Ammannati. It stands a few yards away from the replica of Michelangelo's David ( see my painting of David's face). After taking the reference photos in Florence, all I wanted to do was start painting this scene: the play of light on the incredible marble, the energy and the beauty of the horses. Once I got home, I decided I wanted this painting to be wide: since I wanted it to be wider than 30" of regular watercolor paper, I ordered a roll of the great Italian paper, Fabriano Artistico. 55" wide by 10 yards...a lifetime supply:-) The memory of the scene and the atmosphere around it was still so vivid, that the painting seemed to paint itself. The transparency and the light in this painting bring me joy whenever I look at it.

When I paint, I am happy and feel whole. I paint the beauty of light and the joy I find in life! My work wants to be a sharing of a moment of serenity and balance. It is an expression and reconciliation of my inner dichotomy: I love creativity while needing structure; I love fluidity and softness of colors while craving realist details and lines. Consequently, for example, my watercolour demonstrate realism with colors much enhanced by my imagination. My paintings of sculptures and carvings depict the dancing light on crumbling brickwork, or pastel colors on the stone carvings. In my acrylic or watercolour “Leaves Series”, mysterious but serene light filters through the stems and leaves, water shimmers here and there as the leaves float on the pond. My oil paintings dance with vibrant colors on top of well-structured florals. My first art love was watercolour and my watercolour paintings have won many awards and I have completed major corporate commissions in watercolour. However, I am an explorer at heart and love to try new surfaces, new styles and techniques. I go from watercolour to acrylic paints to mixed media to realistic oils. In the last few years I have become obsessed with detailed oil florals especially of peonies and sunflowers.
