Inverinan lies next to Loch Awe, near Tainuilt, Argyll and Bute. Just outside Inverinan, heading north, I came across these large boulders piled together 30 metres or so from the road, in what appeared to be common land. This part of Scotland is rich in ancient sites - standing stones and remains of bronze age settlements. It is unclear why or how these rocks have been placed here but the actions of prehistoric man seem likely. The geological base here is Silurian volcanic, and these hard dense rocks have obviously withstood several millennia of erosion and weathering. I was inspired by the solemn dignity of the rocks, their rough weathered texture and myriad hues. Lichens, mosses and grasses have colonised the rock surfaces and crevices. As the afternoon sun dipped the horizontal warm light caught the fine mossy stems, giving the rock edges a fuzzy 'halo' which was most attractive. I chose to work in acrylic due to it's water solubility and fast drying properties, working over the acrylic with oil pastels to establish colour and texture. If I have been successful I have given the viewer the feeling that these rocks have character, history and a brooding presence.

My work is primarily figurative – landscapes, portraits and narrative paintings in oil, acrylic and gouache. I never tire of the challenge of rendering a subject in a ‘realistic’ manner whilst at the same time weaving in a story, mood and personality to the piece. In the more narrative compositions, I have attempted to invite the viewer to construct the ‘story’ in their own minds from the content of the picture. My portraits seek by use of pose, composition, colour and tone to give an understanding of the subject’s character beyond the physical likeness. In my landscapes I like to convey the atmosphere and mood of the environment, so the viewer ‘feels’ as much as ‘views’. I work in my garden studio in Kingston on Thames, and my work can be viewed at ricksmithart.webnode.com
