About The Artwork

This opaque miniature depicts the central motif in the doorway to the entrance to the Shah-i-Zinda complex in Samarkhand, a historic city on the Silk Road. The city is famous for its blue tiles, an azure turquoise termed Samarkhand blue made through an ancient mineral process, which represents the blue sky above. This particular motif reminded me of the bright sun, a glowing jewel in the blue.
