About The Artwork
I reached Luken's Lake with all of my oil painting supplies and easel thanks to the strength and dependability of my horse "Oliver." Once at the lake after a two mile trek from "White Wolf," I sat up my easel and began to paint. I felt privileged to be able to be alone at the lake with so many art supplies. My horse became restless as it was getting late so I depended on my subconscious to assist in making a picture that would justify all of the effort.. I believe now I can see that the picture was a success even though at the time that I painted it I had my doubts i.e. I don't believe I could understand right off the value of this work. Now when I look at it I can see that it draws one in very much like the natural power and beauty of the Lake does with its calm elegance.

I work in Yosemite National Park as a tour guide. I have worked in Yosemite for over 30 years. My artwork is inextricably tied to my Yosemite Geography and my ecological message. I am a plein air painter, print maker, and photographer. I also write and illustrate my own books. I am the author of "A Brief Instruction in Christian Religion," (A translation of Faustus Socinus), "The Chronicles of the Field Mouse Timothy," (Corn,Tomato,Wheat, Cotton, Sweet Potatoes, Rice Paddy, Pond Mouse and Yosemite), "Nature Vision" (Poems), and I have illustrated the short stories of my late daughter Sandra Fontana "Cereal at Midnight." I love nature and the wilderness. I am a proponent of the global national parks movement.
