About The Artwork

I've used cyanotype light sensitive emulsion to paint this blue and white seascape. It was painted outdoors on a Queens beach in Cape Town. The print was exposed in the sun and fixed with water. This is an unconventional cyanotype method and is one that I enjoy immensely as the outcome is always a surprise. The cyanotype process was one of the first non-silver technologies used to create photographic images. My inspiration to create cyanotype prints comes from Anna Atkins, a British botanist whose use of cyanotypes - or 'sunprints' - of plants and algae in botanical studies paved the way for the use of photography in scientific publishing. I enjoy painting en plein air and using light sensitive emulsion in a similar way as one would do when painting with watercolour. Being light sensitive, I have to work very quickly and the result isn't always what I envisioned but is always a nice surprise.

I'm a multi-disciplinary artist and don't believe in limiting yourself to one art form. One day I might be making jewellery, another cyanotypes, collage or ceramics. I strive to create artwork that celebrates the natural world and find inspiration from the rural landscape and ocean in my home country. I don't always know where I'm going with my creations but I try not to overthink things and to create without limitations or fear.
